The United States imposed new sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Friday (October 9), only hours after former ICC judge Navi Pillay won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The move could further increase diplomatic tensions between Washington and its European allies.
Established in 2002, the ICC investigates and prosecutes war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. The court has 125 member states and is based in the Netherlands.
South African lawyer Navi Pillay served as a judge in the ICC’s Appeals Chamber from 2003 to 2008. She received the Nobel Peace Prize for her work to promote peace and international law.
The Nobel Committee said the award highlights the importance of the rule of law at a time when international courts and judges are facing growing political pressure.
