Six eggs made of gold were brought into Bangladesh from Abu Dhabi. However, after failing to secure the expected price in the local market, those involved attempted to take them back to Abu Dhabi.
The six gold eggs were seized in two separate operations at two airports. They weighed approximately 2.728 kilograms in total and had an estimated market value of Tk 49.1 million.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) announced the seizures in a press release on Sunday, November 1.
On Sunday, a passenger identified as Mohammad Minhaj was removed from a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight travelling from Dhaka to Abu Dhabi via Chattogram after he aroused suspicion. The flight departed at 7:20 p.m.
Customs intelligence officials later recovered three gold eggs weighing a total of 1.364 kilograms with the passenger’s cooperation.
In a separate incident, officials from the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate seized three more gold eggs found abandoned near an airport boarding bridge. These also weighed 1.364 kilograms.
The authorities said legal proceedings over the seizures were underway.
