The 136th death anniversary of humanitarian mystic and Baul legend Fakir Lalon Shah is being observed today, Saturday (October 17).
A three-day commemorative programme and fair have begun at Lalon Akhra in Chheuria, Kushtia. A separate memorial programme has also been organised in Dhaka.
Lalon Shah died in Chheuria of Kumarkhali upazila in Kushtia on October 17, 1890. Every year, his followers and Baul practitioners gather at the Akhra to honour his memory. His songs are performed to the sounds of traditional instruments, including the ektara, dotara and khamak.
On August 28, 2025, the then interim government approved the observance of October 17 as a Category A national day in memory of Lalon Shah. National-level celebrations began that year.
Lalon’s songs and philosophy remain an important part of Bengali folk culture and humanist thought. The commemorative programmes will highlight his life, philosophy and creative works through music and discussions.
