Ishraque Hossain Announces Resignation as State Minister
Dhaka-6 lawmaker Ishraque Hossain has announced his resignation as state minister for Liberation War Affairs, two days after facing widespread criticism for carrying a firearm during an anti-drug operation in Dhaka’s Gandaria area.
He formally announced his decision at a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club on Monday (October 19).
Ishraque said the controversy arose from his participation in the anti-drug operation and that he was stepping down against his party’s wishes. He added that he had discussed the matter with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and expressed his desire to resign so that the controversy surrounding him would not affect the government.
He also said that his campaign against drugs would continue despite his resignation.
Earlier on Monday, Ishraque announced through his verified Facebook page that he would hold a press conference to declare his resignation. Reports of his possible departure from the cabinet had emerged on Sunday night, although his press office initially described those reports as false and misleading.
The controversy began on Saturday after Ishraque was seen carrying a firearm during an anti-drug operation near the Gandaria railway line, drawing widespread criticism on social media and in political circles.
