Biman Bangladesh Airlines has signed an agreement to purchase 10 aircraft from European aircraft manufacturer Airbus. The deal aims to modernize Biman’s fleet and expand its international routes.
The agreement was signed at the Radisson Blu Water Garden Hotel in Dhaka on Wednesday night (October 7). Airbus India and South Asia President and Managing Director Jürgen Westermeier and Biman Managing Director and CEO Kaiser Sohel Ahmed signed the agreement on behalf of their organizations.
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M. Rashiduzzaman Millat, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir, Invest Bangladesh Executive Chairman Ashik Chowdhury and other officials attended the ceremony.
Under the agreement, Biman will purchase four wide-body A350-900 aircraft and six narrow-body A321neo aircraft.
According to Airbus, the A350-900 uses 25 percent less fuel and produces lower carbon emissions. It can carry between 332 and 352 passengers in a three-class layout, or up to 480 passengers in an all-economy layout. The aircraft can fly up to around 18,000 kilometres without stopping.
The A321neo is designed for medium-sized passenger operations and can fly up to 7,500 kilometres. It can carry between 180 and 220 passengers in a two-class layout, or up to 244 passengers in an all-economy layout.
Biman currently operates flights to 24 international and seven domestic destinations. The new aircraft are expected to help the airline expand its services across the Middle East, Europe and North America.
