22-Day Fishing Ban Begins to Protect Breeding Hilsa
A 22-day fishing ban began at midnight on Wednesday (October 7) to protect breeding hilsa. The ban will remain in effect until October 29.
During this period, catching, transporting, marketing, selling and storing hilsa and all other types of fish in rivers and the sea will be prohibited. The Department of Fisheries and local authorities will work together to enforce the ban.
As in previous years, the Department of Fisheries imposed the restriction to protect egg-carrying hilsa during the breeding season. Fishermen must avoid catching hilsa and other fish in the sea and in rivers across the Sundarbans.
The Fisheries Department, Forest Department, Coast Guard, Navy and River Police will conduct regular patrols, operations and mobile court drives. Anyone who breaks the ban by catching, transporting, storing or selling fish will face strict legal action.
