A Dhaka court has placed two retired army officers—Lieutenant Colonel Debashish Kumar Barua and Lieutenant Kazi Gulshan Ara—on four-day remand in a case involving allegations of an anti-government political conspiracy.
The case was filed under laws relating to sedition, counterterrorism and cybersecurity.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Didarul Alam issued the remand order on Monday (October 12) after rejecting their bail applications.
The investigating officer, Inspector Sheikh Bashir Ahmed of the Detective Branch’s Cyber and Special Crime Division (South), had requested a seven-day remand for each defendant.
During the hearing, defence lawyer Abdullah Al Mansur Ripon requested the court to reject the remand applications and grant them bail. State prosecutor Harun-or-Rashid argued in favour of the remand. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail applications and granted a four-day remand for each defendant.
Detective Branch officers arrested the two former military officers during separate raids in the Pallabi and Banani DOHS areas of Dhaka on Sunday night (October 11). DB Inspector Ali Akbar later filed the case against them.
