Former RAJUK Chairman and Seven Others Sentenced to 14 Years in Prison
A Dhaka court has sentenced former RAJUK chairman Iqbal Uddin Chowdhury and seven others to 14 years in prison for corruption in the allocation of plots under the Purbachal Residential Project.
Judge Md. Abdus Salam of Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-9 delivered the verdict on Tuesday (October 13).
The other convicted individuals are former RAJUK members S. D. Foyez, A. K. M. Wahedul Islam, S. M. Jafar Ullah, H. M. Jahirul Haque and Rezaul Karim Tarafder, along with plot recipients Shawkat Aziz and Ashfaq Aziz.
According to the case documents, the Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case on February 8, 2017. The case alleged that the defendants worked together to allocate two 10-katha plots—covering a total of 20 kathas—to Shawkat Aziz and Ashfaq Aziz by abusing their influence and violating regulations.
The prosecution claimed that the illegal allocations caused financial losses to the state. The ACC submitted a charge sheet after completing its investigation, and nine prosecution witnesses testified during the trial.
