Shubho Mahalaya Celebrated Today

THT Report • October 10, 2026

Shubho Mahalaya, the sacred beginning of the countdown to Durga Puja, is being observed today, Saturday.

Mahalaya marks the end of Pitru Paksha and the beginning of Devi Paksha. According to Hindu scriptures, Goddess Durga was given the responsibility of defeating Mahishasura on this day. It also marks the beginning of her journey to Earth.

Devotees welcome Goddess Durga through the recitation of the Chandi and traditional Agomoni songs. Religious and cultural programmes have been arranged at temples and puja mandaps across Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh to mark the occasion.
