Prime Minister and Opposition Leader Visit Chattogram on Same Day

Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman and Opposition Leader and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman are visiting Chattogram on Tuesday (October 20).

The two senior political leaders will attend separate programmes in the port city. Officials said no meeting between them is expected during their visits.

Dr Shafiqur Rahman is scheduled to attend a party event at the GEC Convention Centre in the morning. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will visit the Durga Puja mandap at JM Sen Hall in the evening to exchange greetings with members of the Hindu community. He will later attend an organisational meeting with local BNP leaders.

A four-tier security system has been established across Chattogram city and district for the visits and Durga Puja celebrations. More than 20,000 personnel from the police, Special Response Battalion, Ansar and Border Guard Bangladesh have been deployed.

The simultaneous visits of the prime minister and the opposition leader have generated widespread discussion within political circles.
