30 Bangladeshis Freed from Detention in Cambodia Return Home

THT Report • October 20, 2026
Thirty Bangladeshis released from an immigration detention centre in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, returned home on Tuesday (October 20).
They arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka aboard a Thai Airways flight in the afternoon.
The Bangladeshis had travelled to Cambodia in search of employment but later became trapped in scam centres operating in different parts of the country. After the Cambodian government offered foreign nationals an opportunity to return home without paying overstay fines, they registered for repatriation.
They arrived at Phnom Penh International Airport on September 3 to fly home. However, immigration police detained 32 of them during checks over immigration irregularities and other complications. Two were subsequently released, while the remaining 30 were held at an immigration detention centre.
Following an appeal by the Anirban Survivor Voice Foundation, the Bangladesh Embassy in Bangkok was asked to take the necessary steps to secure their release and facilitate their swift return. After completing the required procedures, the 30 Bangladeshis returned to Dhaka on Tuesday.
